Wig Maintenance

Having great quality hair, at the end of the day, is only half the equation. Making sure to maintain your wig and apply the best tips for care can go a long way towards extending the life-span of your wig. In this article we will go over some of our tips here at Faerie Locks for properly handling your wigs and ensuring an amazing experience each time you put one on.

Washing Your Hair

Before washing your wig you want to detangle the hair. Gently run your fingers or a wide-tooth comb through the hair, working your way from the ends to the roots. It is also good to note that using a brush or detangling hair while it is wet is not recommended as both could cause damage.Β

For color-treated hair you will want to use the appropriate color safe shampoo. (eg. Christophe Robin’s Delicate Volumizing Shampoo with Rose Extracts)Β

And for natural hair we recommend any sulfate-free shampoos.

Place a small amount of shampoo in your hands and gently distribute the products through the hair by combing your fingers through the strands and rinse under cool, running water. Gently squeeze out excess water, making sure not to twist or wring the hair.

Condition according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply from the mid-shaft down to the ends. Applying conditioner to the base of the wig may cause shedding. Rinse under cool, running water and gently squeeze with hands or dry towel. Again not twisting or wringing the hair.

When you’re drying your hair, try not to do so on a wig stand or your head because it may stretch out the cap.

Styling Your Hair

When styling your hair, make sure to not overuse products to decrease the risk of product buildup. Too much product can also weigh down your hair.

Using heat on your human hair wig bears the same principles as using heat on your own: moderation, moderation, moderation. But it can be sensible to be extra careful with a wig because the hair will not grow back. When using a hair dryer use low to medium heat and dry in sections. Then style like you would your hair.

Finally, we like to use a shining spray to enhance the finished look of our wig and really make it pop. Spray some in your hands, rub it down the hair and voila!

Storing Your Wig

It is best practice to keep your hair in a cool, dry place. Keeping your hair on a wig stand can also preserve your style and protect your hair from crimps and tangles.

Do your very best not to sleep, swim, or shower in your wigs as we don’t recommend it for the general wellbeing of your wig. And we also highly recommend covering your wig to protect it from dust.
